Tea, or Coffee? (2012 is Coming)
The Online Photographer &bull Dec 15, 2011
Always wanting to get with the program (you know me, a conformist sheep), I got my fine cast-iron Chinese teapot out of the closet in honor of Ctein's post yesterday, and brewed up a couple of pots of green tea. This morning I'm trying some "Golden Monkey" black tea, because I have some. I suspect I like black tea even less than I like green tea, though, which is saying something. I bought the teapot in a shameful blurt… Full Story »

The 10 minute waterfall shoot
travel+photography &bull Dec 15, 2011
I spotted the potential problem when I was typing up my itinerary before even leaving for New Zealand. On the day that we would be driven down the coast from Dunedin to Invercargill, there would be a 10 minute stop to photograph Purakaunui Falls. That's right - just 10 minutes. I'll take a moment here to explain my itinerary process. On a trip like this that incorporates a convention, board meetings, tours, etc., you are generally provided with a whole slew of itineraries. You get one for the board meeting, one for the convention, one for each specific selection you've… Full Story »

Microstock Diaries &bull Dec 13, 2011
As the pioneer of the microstock subscription model, Shutterstock still dominates that part of the market, selling more photos than any other microstock agency and earning their place among most microstockers' top earning agencies. The nature of the search function means photos sell well when they're new. Those that sell particularly well in the early weeks maintain high search positions and… Full Story »

A photo blog without photos
Reuters Photographers &bull Dec 9, 2011
I was recently driving towards Havana on a small, quiet country road in central Cuba. As I came onto a long stretch there was a truck moving slowly ahead of me in my lane, that suddenly stopped on the right side. I approached slowly knowing that in Cuba there are big potholes, very scarce and slow moving traffic, and cows, horses, hens and even children crossing the roads at any time, always without looking. I put… Full Story »

Article: Creating and adding textures to your photographs
News: Digital Photography Review (dpreview.com) &bull Dec 4, 2011
Adding texture to photographic images has exploded in popularity in the last year or so. You can create your own textures, or choose among a wide range of both free and commercial offerings available on the Internet, including smartphone and tablet computer apps. The resulting images often look more like painted pieces of art than pure photographs. The beauty of working with textures is that you have a great deal of latitude in how you choose to apply them. Some images respond… Full Story »

5 Tips for Shooting Off-Camera Flash, Pt. 4
Canon Blogger &bull Dec 1, 2011
This week has been all about wrangling in your off-camera flash. We've gone a little more advanced, and the responses have been quite positive, so if you've got some ideas for other advanced topics to cover, be sure to share your thoughts in the comments. As you may recall, we started the week with attaching the umbrella correctly to your light stand. This was followed by a demonstration of what happens to light as you slide the umbrella closer to… Full Story »

How Does One Survive a Moral Virus?
No Caption Needed &bull Nov 30, 2011
No Caption Needed is a book and a blog, each dedicated to discussion of the role that photojournalism and other visual practices play in a vital democratic society. No caption needed, but many are provided. The above photograph was taken while we were on a brief hiatus but I figured there would be plenty of time to write about it once we returned after the Thanksgiving Holiday. Little did I imagine that it would go viral, become a meme, and basically disappear from… Full Story »

5 Tips for Shooting Off-Camera Flash, Pt. 3
Canon Blogger &bull Nov 30, 2011
This week we are journeying through various tips to wrangle the best possible light out of a single light source off-camera! To do this, we are employing the assistance of only a light stand and a shoot through umbrella. As you may recall, on Day 1, we focused (if you'll pardon the pun) on how to correctly attach the umbrella to the light stand. On Day 2 (yesterday), we shifted gears to demonstrate how adjusting the umbrella's proximity to the flash can affect the quality of light (think hot light versus diffused… Full Story »

Man Sketching in Uzes

Publishing a new photo every day is really hard! Sometimes, I miss the midnight deadline that is self-imposed, but I always get one up before the following midnight.
